The spa doesn’t recommend pictures in the hamam so this isn’t me, but it was the exact same experience.

For some pre-birthday fun I went down to Miami for some R&R with my sister and brother-in-law.

We stayed at The Standard.  This hotel was unbelievable!  The customer service was amazing.  The people were kind and genuinely helpful.  The hotel, pool and grounds were awesome.  It’s truly all in the detail.  Everything was done to perfection and everything had its own intricate little quirk that made it oh so “The Standard”.

Hamam:

A hammam is an ancient ritual of cleansing and purification in a heated chamber, often quite beautiful, that combines a vigorous full-body exfoliation by a therapist who uses a coarse mitt. It’s followed by pouring of warm water, a bubbly soaping, and sometimes a full-body massage.

A real hammam, from an Arabic word meaning ‘heat’, consists of a hot room (the sıcaklık, or hararet), a warm, intermediate room, and the cool room (or soğukluk). Traditionally these were architectural marvels in the Eastern European/Middle Eastern/North African hammam (hamam in Turkey)Read about what happens in a traditional Turkish hammam or hamam.

In a nutshell, my masseuse rubbed clay all over me, let it dry, then poured bowls of hot water over me to wash it off.  Kinda amazing.  I then laid on the hot stones for what felt like forever, letting the heat sink down to my bones.  Spa music, quiet environment, hot stones, I feel more relaxed just talking about it!

To be continued….I go to Turkey in January and am looking forward to an authentic Turkish hamam experience!
